Homicide Desk Review

Homicide Desk is a single-player detective simulation from Shu’la Lab LLC, released on Steam on September 1, 2026 for Windows. You sit inside a CRT-era police desktop in rain-soaked Ravenport and work homicides the way a desk works: nested files, a lab you operate by hand, CCTV and photo work, and suspects who answer the sentence you typed. No waypoints. No dialogue trees. Charge right and the file closes. Charge wrong and Internal Affairs opens one on you.

This is a buyer’s page, not a trailer. Early Steam users sit at 81 percent positive from about 21 reviews — encouraging, and far too small to treat as a score. Who it is for

Buy this if you like reading. The loop is open a folder, notice a timestamp, drag a UV light, type a question, pin a string, and write a deduction you can defend. Interrogation is free-text. Slide a document across and the stress meter moves. Push on nothing and they lawyer up. That fantasy is the product.

It also helps if you accept a local language model. Suspect and witness replies are generated on your PC from hand-written case facts. Cases, evidence, and endings are authored. The model only phrases the answer. Nothing you type is supposed to leave the machine. The cost is disk and RAM, not a monthly login.

Skip it if you want a 3D scene you walk through, a second player, a console port, or glowing clues. It is Windows Steam, single-player, point-and-click on a stylized OS. Family Sharing works. Steam Deck compatibility is unknown — do not buy it as a handheld title.

What you actually do

The demo (app 4983690) is the tutorial robbery. Retail keeps it as Case #000, The Pawnshop Key, with Tommy Vale. Finish that before a homicide. Captain Morrison drops Case #001 later; this review will not name a killer. Onboarding is the in-game phone, not popup slideshows.

A working hour: nested reports, a fingerprint or chromatograph you calibrate yourself, a call log, pins on the board, then typing. When you can stand in court, you file a warrant. Charging is the process guide. This review only cares that wrong arrests have a system, not a game-over joke. Reopen a solved case and the guilty party can change — the stated replay hook, not a hint about any file.

Around the cases: salary, dispatch, commissary, optional blackjack with in-game currency only. Ratings are DEJUS 12 and Germany 16. Content is a murder-mystery with stylized, non-graphic evidence, mild language, and no sexual content or nudity. English and Arabic have full audio (Arabic is RTL); eight other languages are interface and text. After 1.3.8 those files should be complete in all ten.

Friction you should budget for

Install size. About 13 GB because the model ships in the folder. Check system requirements before checkout: Windows 10 64-bit, dual-core 2.0 GHz, 4 GB RAM, DirectX 11, Intel HD 4000-class as the floor. Recommended is a quad-core and 8 GB. The OS can run on integrated graphics; the model is the heavier part.

No handholding. If The Pawnshop Key already feels opaque, homicides will not highlight folders for you. Read interrogation and forensics if the first lab puzzle dumps you. The design is proud of that opacity. It is also how detective games get refunded.

Launch bugs, already patched. Day-one black screens got a hotfix, then 1.3.4, then 1.3.7. 1.3.8 filled missing Case #000 overlays for seven languages and later-added lines in cases 001–003 (including the warrant charge line) that only Arabic had followed. 1.3.9 stops ollama.exe / llama-server.exe from staying resident after quit. Buy the current depot. A fully updated black screen is a bug report, not the expected state.

Thin sample, thin public docket. A low-twenties sample cannot describe month-two retention. Public notes discuss the training robbery plus cases 001–003 in the translation pass. That is a short list for this many apps. Shu’la Lab has promised more cases, tools, and apps without dates. Price what is on the disk today.

Value at $5.99

List is $5.99. The 17 percent intro offer ran through 15 September 2026. At list you pay indie-puzzle money for a local LLM, a full desk OS, and authored cases with Internal Affairs on a bad warrant. Easy to recommend if that loop is the loop you want and you have the disk.

Weaker if you wanted a long casebook on day one, multiplayer, or French/German voice-over. The 1,000-player note just after launch says the audience showed up; it does not say extra cases already shipped.

Buy now if you liked the demo interrogation, have ~13 GB free, and will update past 1.3.9. Wait if you need a dated new-case post or Deck verification — watch the patch notes, not a guessed quarter. Skip if you will not type questions, cannot spare the disk, or need multiplayer.
